As long as there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the company itself, then with any leveraged play on commodity prices, which is basically what many producers are, the time to be buying is when the price of the underlying commodity is near the bottom of a cycle. It is usually hard to judge exactly where the bottom is going to be but, when it comes to platinum, I think we are nearing that area.

Hello Share Pals: You may have heard me go on about a feisty firm called Photome (PHTM) before. They operate those Tardis-like thingies, which you find in post offices and railway stations. Lots of other places, too, these days. And they do other photographic stuff as well.

Hello Share Munchers: Insurance outfits have taken a pounding over recent months. Mostly, it's because the government said people could take cash sums out of their pensions when the time comes to retire. They expect people who've been saving all their working lives to take the opportunity to blow the lot on a new car, boat and so on. That's the way I read it, anyway.

Canadian copper and gold producer Rambler Metals and Mining (RMM) is expected shortly to please followers with production figures for the year to July close to the top of its guidance range of 200,000 to 220,000 dry metric tonnes of copper from its Ming mine in the north-eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That would represent a 16.4 per cent increase on the previous year, with grades in the region of a decidedly respectable 3.85 per cent. This performance would lend encouragement to the company, listed on AIM and the Toronto Venture Exchange, as it works to expand the formal resource and reserve at Ming and extend its anticipated mine life to 10 years.

Hello Share Pickers: Aggreko (AGK) has been a great share for me. But that was a few years ago. When the share price started to decay after a long healthy bull run, I dumped 'em. There is no loyalty in this black heart. Your best share in the whole wide world should be dropped when things start to go wrong. And they nearly always do, eventually.

Afren (AFR) has taken a massive hit following the suspension of two of its directors, and it could well have further to drop. Last week’s news that the CEO and Chief Operating Officer had received unauthorised payments benefitting them personally has already knocked more than £500 million off the market cap of this oil and gas producer.

In May, I judged Dixons to be a rational speculation on a year’s view, pointing to the weak balance sheet with balance sheet equity assets were geared 2.47 times by debt and the lack of dividend. The shares were 44p and have since moved up 12.5% to 49.5p last seen. Clearly it has to pay down costs to increase profits. That is still my view and the question is can the company achieve this?
