Great bearcast!
Just a couple of observations:-
I agree, the banks and companies can head off wherever they please! However profits derived by conducting business here, they pay full UK tax!
No more, of this ‘clever accounting’ nonsense employed by companies such as the likes of Amazon, Google and Starbucks!
And, wasn’t it the total deregulation of banking that lead to them indulging in casino betting on currencies and derivatives, buying worthless bundles of sub prime lending American mortgages etc, that culminated in the economic crash? Wasn’t it the taxpayer that had to bail out these privately owned banks? Isn’t the re-introduction of some regulation an attempt to prevent a recurrence of these banks greed and stupidity, ruining us all again?
Since Thatcher, successive governments have followed the disastrous and flawed theory of ‘trickle down’ economics. And as the level of taxation has steadily decreased for the very richest in society and the largest of corporations so have they responded in finding ever more imaginative tax avoidance schemes…… so much for paying a fair share!
The tax gap is the measure of the difference between tax collected and the tax that would be collected if all individuals and companies complied with both the letter and the spirit of the law. The latest available figures are for 2010-11 is £32.2 billion! (God only knows what the figure is now, under reptilian Dave and hapless Osbourne’s careful stewardship!)
You can afford to pay a ruddy lot of nurses on that sum…. hell….you could even build new hospitals and fund them to actually treat people!
Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea if we actually had a choice of voting for a proper hard left socialist party, either! I for one have had enough of the era of the ‘fat cats and their unquenchable greed’!
They make the Trade Unions of the Seventies seem the very model of democracy and moderation!

Tom, the lesson re the EUR/CHF positions wasn’t so much to do with overleveraging, more to do with the basic rule that one should not trade a ‘pegged’ currency to try and take advantage of interest rate differentials. This is particularly true in the current climate where there are several currencies in a similar position and we are in the process of a ‘global currency war’ (see James Rickards / Jim Rodgers on this subject) A trader in this case with a small exposure of 1 or 2 mini lots, just $10 – 20,000 in the market could have seen their accounts wiped out – hence the rule mentioned above…
