Christ ! The UK, I mean England, or more specifically, the Bank of England started issuing notes to a greater value than the gold in its vaults in 1694. Why ?
Because people want to trade easily.
Now notes are out the window and we are using title of ownership of private bank deposits to trade. Why ?
Because people want to trade easily.
When the State issues a law requiring taxes to be paid in Gold or declares Gold as the unit of account for settling contractual obligations then I might get the fever.
State money is still in charge.

Great interview
Before world war one a $20 dollar bill would have on the front had something like The Treasury would pay 20 dollars of gold coins on demand it was like a credit note. Today I do not think anyone really knows how much Gold any country as but I think there is more paper contracts for gold than the physical gold. Me and my son have took a position in a ETF on physical gold . It hit a record highs in September 2011, yet never went on to crack the $2,000 an ounce mark widely forecast at the time and in my belief that was a massive bubble that was ramped by the media. My belief Pure gold will become very rare and worth a lot more as time passes and currencies become worth less but saying that I stack shelves in a supermarket what do I now.:)

This ‘interview’ is not going to get Amanda a job on Hard Talk, its more like a great grandad telling his little girl a bedtime story, she can now fall asleep dreaming about gold bars. Amanda next time you get someone like Hambro to interview please have a few moderately difficult questions, I know you are not Jeremy Paxman but at least do not give them time to pull out their currency and stamp collections to avoid it turning into Jackanory although I did enjoy the unwrapping of the gold bar from a £5 note.

All due credit to Mr Hambro for his active and interesting participation in this years investors show. He showed some real guts in facing down his numerous critics to what must have been a most horrendous year for him and his company.
Of course, the long term investment case for gold as a real asset of value is indisputable. And perhaps this time around its not going to be a tremendous world event, such as major war or depression that triggers the next major rise in the gold price, but our old mates the Chinese and their ambition to take down the USA. as top dog.
The plan, apart from matching and exceeding the Americans military superiority, will be the destruction of the US Dollar as the Worlds Reserve and Trading currency with the Renminbi.
Widely acknowledged as being one of most colossal monetary mistakes, of all time – that of Nixon’s decision to break the dollar from the gold standard.
The Chinese have learnt well – and as the world’s largest holder of Gold and the foremost economic power they will soon announce the pegging of the Renimbi to gold. They will initiate, enact and enable a Bretton-Woods System thus giving their currency overwhelming strength and legitimacy over the discredited fiat currencies of all other nations. Countries will be forced to peg their currency to the Renimbi.
So, I’m off to learn Mandarin and buy a few more shares in gold miners, too!.

An opportunity to ask Hambro to explain how he guided a company that was nudging the FTSE 100 just 4 years ago to losing 99.5% of it’s value and a retreat to AIM. Instead he is allowed a longwinded amble as to how governments have done similar with currency. Apart from being an uncomfortably revealing snapshot of a disarming man it seemed like a wasted opportunity. Oh, and how about sharing that chunk of gold with the company owners?
