   Yeah ……….it is all about freedom . Freedom for the fox to go about its life without fear of being ripped apart by 10 or so dogs pulling on it from every angle . A quick painless death it aint . Alternatively a head shot from a small bore rifle with night vision scope will kill it instantly and painlessly .
   Its also freedom for the land owner ………. from having a pack of hounds run through your wheat crop , chased by 30 idiots on horseback out on a jolly . Even when said hunt has had it in writing from the land owner that they are not to hunt his/her land. Imagine tending your allotment all year and just before the veg are ready 30 idiots charge across it on horseback . Yeah they turn up a few weeks later to offer a compo cheque for the damage IF you complain to the hunt . But its just not the same having a cheque . Its like being burgled as an experience .
   I know one thing ………. I would rather take a round in the back of the head that I was not expecting at all than suffer capture by ISIS and being paraded and then butchered for their entertainment . The comparison is chilling .

   Some good points in this article, especially the extent to which resentment of toffs may be fuelling the issue (that never occurred to me), but surely – as Wildes says – it would be less cruel to use a trained and licensed marksman. I used to fire target rifles with live small bore rounds myself in the dim and distant past and can vouch for their remarkable accuracy, and perhaps fast-acting poison could be used (I imagine there are such substances that are relatively harmless to humans) as an extra measure. That said, I realise foxes are mobile so perhaps I’m talking piffle on the grounds of impracticality (I’m basically a city boy whose excursions to the countryside were treats).

   Just one more comment – perhaps “sport” (rather than “activity”, for instance) gives the wrong impression in “I marched on the Countryside March when this sport was first banned”. Just saying.

   Tom, agree that this is partly about class, and Toffs, and a lot of people are disengenuos about the whole issue.
   It is however, whatever way you cut it, institutionalised cruelty, perpetrated by the usual suspects, and typical of Cameron and his class, the Tory party, the establishment, the priviledged, the county set, whatever, to try and wing it with this bogus DODGY DAVE route through parliament.
   Its all about show, power,you can’t tell us what to do, harking back to the past, traditions, for FUCKS SAKE can’t we move on.

   FFS will you stop fucking around with your foxes, leave them to the rural communities that suffer them, and get off your perfumed arses, stop bombing the world, and go back to it, to make a difference.

   If he had used that term for an Arab (even Lawrence of Arabia was being sardonic when he did) his career SHOULD have been written off at a stroke. Come to think of it, though…

   Well as I commented to the mining goddess a fair few months ago, if all nuclear reactors were fuelled by thorium (of which the world has relatively copious reserves) rather than uranium there’d be no issue because there’d be no weapons grade by-products. Furthermore, the gas cooled reactors could be converted quite easily to do so. All geopolitical and economic flummery – as ever!

   Conversely yob culture is attributed to football, predominantly working class, lets add fox hunting to the mandate of yob culture, it shares some similarities, loud, rampaging, disregarding, and something ends up getting hurt, namely a fox, or happless rider, Tally Ho !!!!!!
   You can cherry pick analogies till the cows come home, think, does it elevate us, or degrades us, I know which one, do you?????.

   Fish are intelligent enough that if being hooked caused them so much pain they wouldn’t go and get hooked again in short order – which they do .

   If only society would show the same anger towards paedophiles as it does towards those who do something to animals .
