Let me use this unwanted message to apologise for the earlier unwanted message

By Darren Atwater | Sunday 13 December 2020

Earlier today, ShareProphets readers who use the web notification feature received some unwelcome and annoying messages. Web notifications are the things that pop up every time we publish a new article, notifying the reader. You can only receive it if you opt in — click on that bell symbol on the lower right-hand side of the screen to control it.

I originally thought it was a virus on people’s home computers that disguised itself as a site that you have recently visited. But further investigation has found that the company that provides that web notification service for ShareProphets was infiltrated. A couple of spam messages were sent off, including to those who had opted in to ShareProphets.

It’s been resolved now. I can assure you that no personal information was accessed for the simple reason that the web notifications have no information on those who use it. I don’t get to see who you are, the company doesn’t either.

I apologise for the inconvenience and the annoyance.
