All business awards ceremonies are a load of cock where those obsessed with personal PR, lobby and self-promote and then slap themselves on the back. I shall be turning my fire on the AIM awards very shortly. But as it happens I think the Black business awards make a serious point, but this year they may well lose all credibility as Piers Linney of AIM casino disaster story Outsourcery (OUT) is up for a gong.

More seriously – and at the risk of seriously ticking some people off – I’m not entirely at ease with the notion of any awards system which is inherently discriminatory this day and age. I’d extend that to the MOBOs. Yes – I KNOW racism is despicable and still exists and that, although far from a one-way street, it is non-whites who on balance are probably most disadvantaged most often because of it (in the most insidious way – through quiet, taciturn prejudice), but these days there is empowerment in the form of legal redress. I’m just not sure they have an integrating effect on society (and I believe positive discrimination is a contradiction in terms and can undermine the noble aim with which it was conceived too).
