I knew it was going to be bad news when I saw an unexpected Tesco (TSCO) trading update statement on the wires this morning. This close to Christmas if you are a food retailer you keep your fingers crossed that the shoppers are going to eventually flood into your store unless – of course – the news was really, really different from guidance. I guess the £1.4 billion trading profit indication qualifies on that behalf (I believe consensus UK trading profit guidance was nearer £1.8 billion).

January update ? That is the question. I told people to sell supermarket over 12 months ago and I cannot see it getting better as someone who works in a supermarket. Some supermarkets am sending employee’s home, Sorry asking them to go home because of their contracts. They am in a panic and that is great for Joe public but not for shareholders. They will try anything to get the people in the door but at what price will they buy and how much profit will the store make after half of it will go past the door without being paid for. Keep your money in your pocket these shares will drop more.
