How many stores does Sainsbury’s (SBRY) have? According to its website “We operate over 1,200 stores ranging from convenience formats to supermarkets and mixed use developments. Whilst growing and adapting our floorspace to suit customers and local communities, we are always looking to make our stores more environmentally friendly.” I think it’s interesting to look at the wording of that.

Buying “Netto” was perhaps a very smart move. The “Netto” nearest to where I live in France is ultra-basic, more basic than even Aldi and Lidl, but the prices are good. Forget about the “shopping experience”, just get in there, load up and get out! The Sainsbury/Netto tie-up mirrors the Casino/Leader Price set-up in France, different types of shops for different levels of price consciousness, something which, it seems to me (anecdotally), the Casino Group here has made a success of. Buying Netto seems an intelligent way forward for Sainsbury to compete with the discounters, “if you can’t beat them, join them”. Here’s the Groupe Casino on wiki, in English:
