Don’t panic, sensible corporate names such as Tesco’s have all the answers

couple of months or so ago, I observed that “Tesco (TSCO) is a solid place to do your food shopping – and the same is now true of shares in the company”. The stock was about two quid a share then and it is over 10% above that level, which is alright (and we have not even noted again the 5% dividend yield). Whilst Tesco remains a very solid portfolio holding - and very boring pension fund investors, so much better than holding a government bond - I was intrigued to hear the company’s CEO observe on a BBC report that “households are switching from buying fresh food to cheaper frozen goods as the cost-of-living bites into budgets”...

The View From The Montana Log-Cabin As Gold Marches Higher And The Fed's Warning Light Is Ingnored

Gold finished the week at $1798, having been as high at $1803 – nicely up on last week’s $1756. Gold mining stocks too headed further up as the recovery since the September low continued, as can be seen on my chart of Gold versus the Gold mining ETFs GDX (major), GDXJ (juniors) and GOEX (explorers):

Bear

Inflation, Inflation, Inflation. That's Why I'm Staying (Mostly) in Cash.

Hello Share Trudgers. There’s a feeling in the city that shares will soon rally. A few well-known analysts have said that British equities are cheap compared to the world. And indeed the Footsie has been creeping up. But this old punter believes that - apart form a few lucky sectors - British shares will stall again. Here’s why I’m staying in cash.

MIND

Mind Gym – interims, emphasises profitability. Really?

Previously writing on behavioural science-based business improvement company Mind Gym (MIND), in October with the shares up to 97.5p I noted it emphasised “Significant H1 momentum driving growth”, but questioned how effectively?. Now it has announced results for its half-year ended 30th September 2022.

TERN

Tern – Spot The Pre-Placing Ramp: SELL!

AIM-listed jam-tomorrow (if ever) IoT investment Company Tern plc (TERN) has followed up yesterday’s ramparoonie over Wyld (listed on the joke Nasdaq-of-the-north exchange in Stockholm) with a big announcement of a new contract for jewel-in-the-crown Device Authority worth $1.2 million…….over five years.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast - you are just too kind says a fellow Argo Blockchain bear and 2+2 does not always equal 4

Thanks for all the kind wishes about my health and that of Joshua, we seem to be on the mend. In today's podcast I discuss Kefi Gold & Copper (KEFI), Skinbiotherapeutics (SBTX), Argo Blockchain (ARB) and - in detail - Victoria (VCP)

DCTA

Directa Plus – trading warning. How much faith to have in its stated 2023 confidence?

Previously writing on company describing itself as “a leading producer and supplier of graphene nanoplatelets based products for use in consumer and industrial markets” Directa Plus (DCTA), in October with the shares up to 89.5p I concluded that its recent announcements and above £59 million market cap meant that I retained caution, still avoid/sell. The shares last closed at 83.8p but are currently falling well below 80p on the back of a “trading update”.

Parsley Box share price is soaring as it approaches delisting, offering one last chance to get out whilst you still can - strong sell/avoid

Parsley Box (MEAL) has seen its share price soar over the past couple of weeks on news that it is planning to delist, which seems rather strange as I can’t imagine all the PIs who have been buying actually want to be stuck holding this after it ceases trading on AIM.

Do I really want my taxes lent to upper class twit of the Year Mark Warde-Norbury and Marechale?

The bounceback loan scheme of the then chancellor Rishi Sunak was meant to help small businesses suffering a covid hit to get access to funding to see them through.  As we taxpayers face the highest tax hit in 70 years let’s look at one worthy recipient, Mark Warde-Norbury, speaking to us from the stately home at Hooton Pagnell which has been in the family since 1704. Mark runs Marechale (MAC) a sub scale investment bank which snuck interims out just before lunchtime, allowing Mark time to shoot some wildlife and thrash a few peasants before he speaks to the great unwashed.

TNT

Tintra – could Richard Shearer’s stake soon really be worth £90 million?

Since I wrote about Tintra (TNT), its rule breaking and interim results on 27 October, it has busy with a few new announcements. Is this now a quarter of a billion dollar spoof?

ARB

Argo Blockchain – precisely just how little cash is left

On 7 October Argo Blockchain (ARB) announced a series of measures to raise $39.5 million and claimed that this would be enough to last 12 months. Now I have doubts about that claim but unfortunately a proposed $27 million placing fell through so where is the company now?

CINE

Cineworld shares zoom – has anything changed?

Yes. The share price. Up 30% at the start now 17% ahead at 5.4p.  That has changed. But anything else?

Ariana Resources – Tavsan JORC Resource increase and more to come?

Ariana Resources (AAU) has announced “a tremendous enhancement for Tavsan, as construction continues on site” as this project is further progressed as a second 23.5% interest gold mining operation here.

MAB1

Mortgage Advice Bureau – notes re-financing and market share “opportunities” but also a written business collapse

Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB1) has issued a trading update noting adverse trading impact from the government’s recent manoeuvrings but also that its “re-financing opportunities from its client bank are at a record level for 2023… remains highly cash generative and retains a strong balance sheet”. So what of a now down towards 500p share price, £290 million market cap?

CYAN

CyanConnode – ‘a world leader’ only updating vaguely and only on revenue?

Describing itself as “a world leader in narrowband radio frequency mesh networks”, CyanConnode (CYAN) has issued a trading update and notice of results. So what do these tell us re. a last closing 13.25p share price, £31.9 million market cap?

Tom Winnfrith Bearcast from the house of sickness

Both Joshua and I are feeling dire so this is a very short bearcast covering Peel Hunt (PEEL) and the nomad/broker sector and Purplebricks (PURP), a zero after the latest housing data. Now back to bed.

SEED

Seed Innovations – Ed McDermott Bullish but am I losing faith?

Seed Innovations (SEED) was my exposure to cannabis and a jolly disastrous investment it has been. At 2.6p I am almost 80% out of the money. My feeling is that the cannabis bubble has burst and yesterday’s comment on CBD HERE has to be bad news. I cant bring myself to cut the loss although maybe I should.  But of the NAV is 8p as Ed Claims maybe I should hang on? A couple of weeks ago I exchanged emails with Seed boss Ed McDermott asking him if he was alright?

At Companies House, Iconic’s (ICON) status is now “Voluntary Arrangement” and the administrators filed their final report on 8 November 2022.  So Iconic its back under the control of its directors.
