Such a High PE Suggests Caution for a Slowing Share Which Once Meant Massive Gains

2018-07-16 07:20:48

Hello Share Shifters. We all know the legend of ASOS (ASC), or as it used to be known in the early days of internet shopping, As Seen On Screen. The share rose from about 7p to £12 quid and then went even better. Almost everyone I know in share trading, including me, admits to selling the share too early. But now I think that the ship has sailed and that to buy more shares now might not be such a good idea.

ASOS/ConvaTec: chairs can make a difference

2018-07-03 01:18:36

On a thin regulatory news day, two board member announcements catch the eye.  I have never written about internet clothing retailer ASOS (ASC) on this website before but i did once own the shares following a tip from a mate who liked the look of a small cap called 'As Seen on Screen'.  I remember feeling rather clever after making a very decent return after selling out at 10 pence...  Ah, the shortcomings of youth!

ASOS – H1 results argue “further progress with a strong trading performance”, why does the market disagree?

2018-04-11 06:59:54

Online fashion retailer ASOS (ASC) states it “reports further progress with a strong trading performance for the six months to 28 February 2018”. The shares have responded, er, currently quite a percent lower…

A Big Bank Lauds ASOS's Prospects - But I'm Not So Sure

2017-12-22 01:14:55

Hello Share Diggers. It's always a bit unnerving when one takes a different view to the analysts at a big bank. But I cannot share RBC's view that the share price of ASOS (ASC) will rise.

Paul Scott on why he's short of ASOS

2017-10-20 23:09:22

Some posts on our comments section are so interesting that they merit a wider audience. Overnight Paul Scott, Britain;s top share blogger, served up a really interesting one on ASOS (ASC), prompted by Malcolm Stacey's recent (bearish) article here. This is really very interesting analysis. The great Scott writes:

I Hate to Mention ASOS, Chums, but Its Impressive Full-Year Numbers May Not Be Sustained

2017-10-18 00:18:39

Hello, Share Monkeys. I’ve not covered ASOS (ASC) before, as I know it causes a lot of us some pain. I hardly know one investor, among my city gang, who has not sold the damn shares too early. Everybody knows the legend. ASOS is the share which is probably the most quoted when we lament to friends how much we could have made.

Hello Share Toddlers. My weekend piece suggesting we don’t sell our shares too soon received a critical response from Uncle Tom. It’s a return to the familiar battle between me in the blue corner and the sage of Bristol in the red one.

Look At Our Great Wall of Shops to Benefit from the China Syndrome

2017-01-30 01:08:43

Hello Share Pingers. For the last few years I’ve poured scorn on investing in most retail chains. This is because of the encroachment of on-line shopping. But I’ve changed my mind. For one thing the big retailers have built up blistering on-line operations of their own. They are putting up a strong front of competition to long-time on-line specialists like ASOS (ASC).

ASOS's Galloping Success Is Astounding - But Can It Last?

2016-10-24 00:15:58

Hello Share Bashers. Uncle Tom recently run an interesting compilation of tips from writers on this monumental website. He invited us to think of companies which might emulate the astounding success of shares in ASOS (ASC), the big on-line fashion outlet.

Could there ever be another ASOS in terms of share price gain? And if so what?

2016-10-19 01:33:02

As I noted in bearcast yesterday I remember my old pal Mark Watson Mitchell tipping ASOS (ASC) at 7p. The shares hit a high of c£70 so that was a 1000 bagger for anyone who got their timing spot on and held. I doubt anyone did. But could there be another ASOS lurking out there on the London Stockmarket and if so what is it?

This Super Share Might Still Suit You, Sir or Madam.

2016-08-02 00:31:37

Hello Share Bunnies. I have to admit that my heart lurches every time I hear the name ASOS (ASC), the big on-line clothing store which used to be called As Seen On Screen. Maybe it still is, but the name, which was so up-to-the-minute when the company started now seems dated, as so many retailers are also online now.

ASOS plc – what’s the outlook as founding CEO stands down?

2015-09-04 03:55:17

Following an announcement earlier this week from ASOS plc (ASC) that founder Nick Robertson is to stand down as CEO with immediate effect, being succeeded by Chief Operating Officer Nick Beighton, I update with the shares currently falling further below 3000p…

ASOS plc – even house brokers don’t see much upside from here, others even more cautious

2015-04-02 04:10:44

Following interim results from online fashion retailer ASOS (ASC) yesterday, I concluded that the valuation discounted heroic improvement from what is presently being delivered and looks to leave precious little margin for any concern to have an at all material impact – see HERE. The following reviews the response of the broker community…

ASOS plc – interim results, valuation again looking ludicrous?

2015-04-01 04:14:56

Shares in online fashion retailer ASOS (ASC) currently trade higher today on the back of a results announcement for the six months ended 28th February 2015 – which included that “we are confident of our outlook for the remainder of the financial year”. Does this though look to justify a further move ahead to a current 3800p share price?

ASOS – Q2 2015 trading statement; sales cheer, but margins fear

2015-03-13 07:10:39

On the back of an update on trading to the end of February, shares in online 'fast fashion' retailer ASOS plc (ASC) have rebounded sharply, to currently more than 3700p. However, is the move justified?

ASOS plc – trading statement; food for the bulls or bears?

2015-01-13 05:01:55

Online 'fast fashion' retailer ASOS plc (ASC) has updated that full year guidance “remains unchanged” following trading in the six weeks to 9th January “in line with expectations”. After a number of profit warnings, is this enough to bolster confidence in the valuation – a 2500p share price meaning a market cap in excess of £2 billion currently – here?

ASOS plc – broker views divided following Q1 2015 trading statement

2014-12-11 02:19:23

Commenting on the recent quarterly trading statement from online 'fast fashion' retailer ASOS plc (ASC), I concluded that it did little to improve my sceptical view on the valuation – which has been more bearish than what has seemed to be the consensus broker view. The following updates on the broker reaction to the trading update.

ASOS plc – Q1 2015 trading statement, reassuring to the bulls or bears?

2014-12-09 10:40:30

Online 'fast fashion' retailer ASOS plc (ASC) has updated on its quarter ended 30th November 2014 – emphasising that a “strong UK performance continued”, though admitting that “international trading conditions remain challenging”. The following updates.

ASOS plc – the recent management share buying in context

2014-10-29 15:19:19

Having fallen to sub 2000p before a 21st October results announcement, shares in ASOS plc (ASC) have rebounded to around the 2500p level currently. The following reviews with some management share buying having occurred at the start of this rebound.

ASOS plc – is the consensus broker view wrong again?

2014-10-23 08:29:33

Having reviewed results from ASOS plc (ASC) for its year ended 31st August 2014 myself HERE, the following takes a look at broker views of the announcement and what the shares are worth.

ASOS plc – full-year results reviewed, rating is barking

2014-10-22 11:10:35

Shares in online fashion company ASOS (ASC) bounced back somewhat yesterday on the back of results for its year ended 31st August 2014. The following reviews whether the response looks warranted.

Steve Moore is Right – The Mighty ASOS Has Work to Do

2014-09-16 21:15:11

Hello Share Spinners. ASOS stands for As Seen on the Screen. This was a great monicker for a company when internet shopping was just getting into swing. But it sounds a bit dated now, which is probably why the initials are used these days.

ASOS plc - another profit warning, another share price slump

2014-09-16 13:14:50

Having fallen from more than 7000p in February, shares in online 'fast fashion' retailer ASOS plc (ASC) currently trade a further more than 6% lower today, at 2270p, on the back of an update that “we expect profit before tax for the year to 31 August 2015 to be at a similar level to 2013/14”. So what now for the shares after the THIRD profits warning?

ASOS: I said sell at £33, shares now £24 – target cut from £20 to £16, keep selling

2014-08-03 09:29:19

Nine weeks ago after the profits warning from ASOS (ASC), to much abuse from Bulletin Board Morons who looked at price not value, I warned that the shares would fall further from £33 - HERE. They have. But the shares have further to slide and I am today cutting my target price from £20 - see HERE -  to £16 and here’s why.

ASOS Warehouse on fire – if it was a sell before….

2014-06-21 14:40:59

Oh dear, Oh dear. It seems as if the ASOS (ASC) warehouse, somewhere in the Grim North went up in smoke on Friday evening. The UK website has stopped taking orders but says that it will resume operations within the next day or so. Ok so what about the share price then?

ASOS – Morgan Stanley sticks the knife in - £25 target

2014-06-13 12:46:03

I am an ASOS (ASC) bear and explained last week why I think the shares should be at £23 - HERE. Natch the City’s brokers all used phrases such as “buying opportunity” after the most recent profits warning. Heck they seek corporate mandates rather than handing out decent advice. But hat’s off to Morgan Stanley. It has broken ranks with a bearish note out today. Good on you fellas.

ASOS plc – brokers wrong before, are they wrong again?

2014-06-10 17:27:38

Following the most recent profit warning and share price decline from ASOS plc (ASC), a number of brokers have updated with a positive stance on the shares. Are the City community right now having also largely been positive at much higher prices previously (see HERE)? Er...

ASOS – Still a sell – target c£23

2014-06-06 08:56:10

ASOS (ASC) got off lightly with its profits warning yesterday but as its PR and IR machine cranks up do not be tempted to bottom fish at £33 – this stock £70 not that long ago ) is heading lower still. £23 looks about right as an initial share price target.

ASOS – the aftermath of another profit warning

2014-06-05 13:10:57

Having reached more than 7000p in February, shares in online ‘fast fashion’ retailer ASOS plc (ASC) currently trade a further more than 27.5% lower today at 3272p on the back of an update that a “higher mix of UK and European sales, with lower retail margins, together with increased levels of promotional activity, leads us to reduce our EBIT margin guidance to c.4.5% from c.6.5% for the current financial year”. Having warned continuously over the last year on the valuation – see HERE, the following updates my view.

ASOS plc – ‘the internet premium’ challenged

2014-05-15 15:55:27

I first commented on ASOS plc (ASC) on this website at around this time last year – concluding, with the shares then at 3755p, that despite the growth being recorded and growth potential, the valuation looked incredibly stretched to me – see HERE. In February this year the shares reached 7050p. The following updates with them now back to levels of May 2013 and following the recent publication of a consumer sector report by researchers Edison entitled ‘Challenging the internet premium’.

All Parties Have to End Sometime ref: Tesco and ASOS.

2014-04-28 06:17:52

Hello share fans. Every dog has its day. Or everybody gets 10 minutes of fame. Something similar to these well-known sayings happens in Shareland. It is wise to be aware of it.

ASOS plc – 5 lessons from an approaching 40% share price decline in less than 7 weeks

2014-04-14 11:47:45

On 26th February this year, shares in then investor darling online fashion retailer ASOS plc (ASC) closed at 7050p. Today they trade at below 4300p, a level not seen since last July. What lessons can be learned from this dramatic fall from grace?

ASOS plc - interim results; reassuring or not?

2014-04-02 12:30:27

Shares in AIM-listed ASOS plc (ASC) are currently treading water today on the back of an announcement of results for the six months ended 28th February 2014. However, the following reviews with a sub 5200p share price comparing to more than 7000p as recently as February and 6326p before a badly received March trading update.

ASOS - would Benjamin Graham buy now? No!

2014-03-24 12:05:20

Shares in online retailer of 'fast fashion' targeted at 20-somethings, ASOS plc (ASC) are continuing to slide following an update from the company last week which reported 26% sales growth in the two months ended 28th February compared to the corresponding 2013 period. With the shares currently at 5150p, having reached more than 7000p last month and closed at more than 6300p the day before last week’s update, is there now some value here or is the share price reaction justified for a growth investment which has faltered?

ASOS plc - A Serious Or Short-term profit warning?

2014-03-18 13:10:21

Online retailer of 'fast fashion' targeted at 20-somethings, ASOS plc (ASC) has reported slower sales growth for the two months ended 28th February (+26% v. +38% in the prior four months, +35% in the corresponding 2013 period) and updated that investment in warehousing and in its China start-up will reduce full-year EBIT margin. The shares have tanked.

ASOS plc – are the brokers wrong in largely remaining positive?

2014-01-15 17:30:16

In a positive overall market, shares in international online fashion and beauty retailer ASOS plc (ASC) are continuing to recover having declined yesterday on the back of a trading update for the last four months of 2013. Having expressed my view on that HERE, the following updates with broker views of the company.

ASOS – 38% growth but shares slump 6%: what the xxxx?

2014-01-14 16:24:09

London stock market darling, international online fashion and beauty retailer ASOS plc (ASC) has updated that it “continues to trade in line with expectations" with a 37% year-on-year increase in total group revenue (to £342.57 million) for the four months to end December. In light of a market cap which recently exceeded £5.5 billion and a share price fall of 6% today what the xxxx is going on?

ASOS: “Safe” Buying Zone Towards £60

2014-01-14 12:26:49

Apparently even well known (clothes) horse Samantha Cameron is a fan of online fashion retailer ASOS (ASC), having splashed out £42 on a garment from the group where sales have just been reported to have gone up by 38% over Christmas.

Paul Scott shorting ASOS and Ocado and why he’s a Globo bear

2013-10-25 08:47:07

Analyst Paul Scott is a well-respected commentator, a nice bloke and someone who showed he is a good judge of men in terming Tom Winnifrith "bonkers" and has historically been a long only investor. He has, however, opened up two short positions in the past week – this is a big departure for him. The shorts are ASOS (ASC) and Ocado ( OCDO).

ASOS plc - detail of vast management share sales

2013-10-24 15:30:55

Yesterday, on the back of results for its year ended 31st August 2013, I suggested that in order to sleep easy investors in ASOS looked best served ‘checking-out’ significant stakes given the prevailing share price. Members of the company’s senior management team look to have reached a similar conclusion – the following updating on the today-released details of more than £94 million of share sales by them at 5000p per share…

ASOS plc - full-year results, follow management & top slice

2013-10-23 15:54:49

Investor Darling AIM-listed online fashion business, ASOS plc (ASC) has announced continued strong growth in its year to 31st August 2013 and that “we have started the new financial year positively”. The shares went to 5200p on the news allowing senior management to sell £94 million of shares at 5000p - something announced today. They have top sliced with a £4.3 billion market cap. So should you.

ASOS - Q3 trading statement, valuation continues to look stretched

2013-06-13 06:07:48

Online fashion and beauty retailer (and AIM-listed stock market darling) ASOS plc (ASC) has announced further accelerating UK and international sales in its third quarter ended 31st May 2013. UK retail sales of £64.35 million represented a 39% year-on-year increase (up from a second quarter increase of 28% and first quarter increase of 24%), with international retail sales of £129.27 million representing a 48% year-on year increase (up from 45% and 34%).

Buy ASOS (ASOS): Ready To Stretch Some Moore

2013-05-11 04:14:11

Although fellow share profit Steve Moore is undoubtedly a man of wisdom and integrity, at least on a technical analysis basis I am prepared to disagree with his judgement on ASOS and call shares in the online fashion retailer significantly higher.

ASOS plc - valuation now incredibly stretched?

2013-05-10 05:46:08

ASOS plc (ASC), the AIM-listed stock market darling online fashion and beauty retailer, has cost bears dear over the years – including infamous Evil Knievil.

Exclusive Evil Knievil loses more than £250,000 as he closes ASOS short…but

2013-05-03 04:33:18

We can exclusive reveal that infamous bear raider Evil Knievil has thrown in the towel on his attempts to short online retailer ASOS (ASC) and has closed his short.

Buy ASOS To Target 3,600p Plus

2013-04-30 05:35:08

A 6 months sales jump of 34% would suggest that my lifestyle guru Evil Knievil may find himself in the King Canute position as far as his bear trade in fashion retailer ASOS.

Short Term Sell ASOS: Reversal Pattern Based At 3,100p

2013-04-16 01:54:57

It was a strange Traders’ Session at the UK Investor Show, and not only because I was seated next to Evil Knievil on stage. Apart from a gravitational attraction – the great bear is approximately twice my weight, I was rather pulled into the idea of online retailer ASOS (ASC) being a possible sell.

ASOS Trading Statement: Evil Knievil and the Bears will carry on getting burned

2013-01-18 06:38:20

AIM-listed international online fashion retailer ASOS (ASC) has published a positive update on December trading – sending the shares up to £26.60, which capitalises it at more than £2.19 billion. The following reviews the trading announcement and current investment proposition from this company that great bear Evil Knievil has consistently shorted and consistently got wrong…

Evil Knievil’s Biggest Short is ASOS: is he Right?

2012-11-06 12:04:53

A good chat with bear raider Evil Knievil today throws up the fact that his biggest short position right now is online celebrity driven retailer ASOS (ASC) but also that he is looking at another stock that I have already written up as a slam dunk short – more on that later. Those who have followed the great bear will remember that Evil has consistently shorted ASOS ( betting against the lure of Stella McCartney, Kate Moss etc) and consistently got it wrong. His losses over the years on this one must be well into seven figures by now but undeterred he is at it again. But is he right?
