Sterling Energy has plenty of cash and the opportunity to pick up a producing asset on the cheap - buy

Current market conditions are bad for many companies, with the oil and gas sector having been hit particularly hard as commodity prices have crashed, but this can create opportunities for some companies.

Genel Energy has great growth potential

As long as you are prepared to accept a degree of geo-political risk, then I find it very hard not to like Genel Energy (GENL) at the current share price.

Genel Energy remains a long term hold for me

Genel Energy (GENL) has been one of a number of mid-tier oil and gas companies which really took a hit during the slump in oil prices over the past few years, and had seen its share price decimated as a result.

Bearcast

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast - How the Shipmans are buttering up my Dad plus punishing the wrong folks at Tesco

My father is being charmed and buttered up by the quacks at Warwick Hospital and I am off there shortly for a pre operation chat. Ahead of that I look at Tesco (TSCO) and its fines today - we really have got white collar crime all wrong in this country. Then I look at Genel (GENL), Tasty (TAST) which is really not very tasty at all, Advanced Oncotherapy (AVO) which is is utterly inedible and Sound Energy (SOU) where the issue is valuation. Surely the good news is in the price already?

Could there ever be another ASOS in terms of share price gain? And if so what?

As I noted in bearcast yesterday I remember my old pal Mark Watson Mitchell tipping ASOS (ASC) at 7p. The shares hit a high of c£70 so that was a 1000 bagger for anyone who got their timing spot on and held. I doubt anyone did. But could there be another ASOS lurking out there on the London Stockmarket and if so what is it?

Why I've been buying Genel despite the risks

Geo-political instability can make investments far more risky, but alongside that you will often find the potential for large returns with companies which look undervalued based upon their fundamentals.

Gulf Keystone at 27p – a risky buy, but watch the 6.25% 2017 bond price

In the next week we should find out whether or not the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) is going to make good on its summer pledges. In August and September it promised to establish a regular payment cycle to the various oil producing companies active in the country for crude exports. Share prices of Gulf Keystone (GKP), Genel (GENL) and Norwegian firm DNO (DNO) leapt on the news. Two months and two payments later, the third should be due on or around 15 November. If Gulf receives another $15million, might this help restore some faith in the company’s future?

Is the dire situation in Iraq a chance to average into Kurdish oil stocks?

I’ve spent a little time this morning wondering how I could write about events in Kurdistan. It is horrible hoping to profit out of human suffering, but I’ve had to remind myself the market is amoral. It simply reflects the good and the bad of our society, for better or worse. I’ve chosen to be a market commentator and it is more than probable that if you are reading this piece you’ve chosen to buy stocks. However we might feel about what is happening in the world, in this aspect of our lives our goal is simply to grow our wealth by as much as we can. Fear often leads to the best buying opportunities. It is generally a costly mistake to ignore this. The precipitous drop in the value of the various companies with Kurdish oil ventures could prove to be a significant opportunity for anyone who believes in the long term viability of these operations.

Range Resources; Remembering Puntland

Apparently I damned Range Resources (RRL) with faint praise yesterday. While the ramping brigade worked themselves up into a lather over what an incredible deal the $12million placement is, the realists recognised that 1p is a pretty dreadful price. The market clearly agrees. Only about £980,000 worth of stock changed hands (c.130million shares). It remains to be seen what Range’s new management team does with the slender lifeline it now clings to, but assuming it can genuinely turn the company around, then there is still a massive prize to play for in a few years time; Puntland.
