John operates largely in Australia and writes about why fraud flourishes in Oz although he misses out the obvious point that half of the population there have criminal genes. But what the man behind Bronte Capital says about life down under must surely ring more than a few bells back in the UK. He opines:
In today's extra long podcast I reflect that one day folks like Julie Meyer will win and I shall call it a day. I have lasted two years longer than John Hempton predicted. I also look back on a curious fraud from my early days back in, I think, 1995. I look at Tomco (TOM), Range Resources (RRL), RedT (RED), Columbus Energy (CERP) and VSA valuations, Goldstone Resources (GRL), Verseon (VERS) and Domino's Pizza (DOM). If you enjoyed this, I think, profanity free bearcast, follow a bloke from the Grim North who donated enough to buy a whole house in the welfare safari and support the Rogue Bloggers for Woodlarks HERE.
Those who listened to Australian fund manager John Hempton speak at the Gold and Bears show last November will know that attention to detail is very much his thing. They will have heard him mutter that he believed US Pharmaceutical giant Valeant, based in Canada, to be worthless. This has been a bold call with ranks of hedge fund royalty (the most prominent being the unbelievably arrogant Bill Ackman) lined up against him.
John Hempton of Bronte capital in Oz, was a star of the recent Gold & Bears show and is right now King of the Bears - you can see his performance HERE. I started looking at Alibaba (US:BABA) as a cracking short yesterday HERE but now bring you a Hempton article from a couple of months ago which is absolutely brilliant. Read this and then tell me if you believe a word that Alibaba claims. It is a slam dunk short. Over to the King of the Bears..
John presented via video link from Madrid due to an itinerary confusion - once again many thanks to Jose from Mirada (MIRA) for arranging that all. But the legendary Aussie bear was on cracking form at Gold & Bears. We start with the story of Cupid (CUP). The week before the show John wiped $20 billion off the value of one US stock thanks to a report he published.
We have now had a few last minute return tickets become available for Gold & Bears on Saturday and you can get your hands on them today. We will email them out tonight. And with speakers from across the world lined up Saturday looks set to be explosive. The SuperBears 7 big name stocks to go to zero session with myself, Lucian Miers, Graham Neary and the Dark Destroyer Matt Earl is set to really get the lawyers excited!

Breaking news: We have a new speaker at Gold & Bears, Gabriel Grego the author of the report that exposed the Globo fraud is flying in from New York as a new headliner. This guy is good.
Sirius Minerals (SXX) has just received approval for its polyhalite (potash) mine under the North York Moors National Park.
The stock was up about 50% yesterday and the market cap is now about half a billion pounds. Now they have the small matter of financing the mine, building it and operating it to specification. It is a big project. Here is the corporate video:
Slater & Gordon overpaid grotesquely for the Quindell (QPP) legal business but the Aussie company is now beginning to pick up the tab as the bears move in. Two of the bear pit panel at UK Investor Show are already short of Slater & Gordon as is well known Aussie bear raider John Hempton of Bronte Capital. Lucian Miers opens the batting for the UK bears.
As the stench of death gets ever more ghastly at Quenron (QPP) it seems that every new day this corpse in waiting attracts the attention of a new celebrity bear raider. A couple of weeks ago Muddy Waters chipped in. Today it is the legendary John Hempton of Bronte Capital who has been tweeting words of “encouragement” to the morons. That is before he warns that the shares are going to 0p.
