Plus500 – argues a “disappointing” Q1 “due to extremely subdued financial markets”. Really?

Previously writing on Contracts for Differences trading provider Plus500 (PLUS), I noted in February a house broker 1760p share price target but with the shares lower below 1000p concluded I’d certainly still feel more comfortable with the bears than the bulls. Today a ‘Q1 2019 Trading Update’ commencing “Subdued financial markets in the quarter weighed on revenue for the period”. Uh oh…

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: why I am a journalist not a thirsty share blogger & count-down for Telit

I also cover Telit (TCM), UK Oil & Gas (UKOG), Dev Clever (DEV), Plus500 (PLUS) and Patagonia Gold (PGD) and other loss making companies that, for some reason, have net debt.

Plus500 – share buyback & shareholder moves. A 1760p price target… or not?

Following the same yesterday, both a “Transaction in Own Shares” and “Holding(s) in Company” announcement from Plus500 (PLUS) already today. The shares have though currently responded further lower, below 1000p…

Plus500 – “pleased to announce” results… so why a near 30% share price crash?

Writing on Plus500 (PLUS) in November with the shares rising above 1400p, I questioned it stating “a good position for 2019”. Today from the company “pleased to announce preliminary unaudited results for the year ended 31 December 2018”… but the shares currently approaching 30% lower, at around 1150p!...

FCA binary options & CFD proposals – what do they mean ref. IG Group, CMC Markets & Plus500?

The FCA has announced proposals to “ban the sale, marketing and distribution of binary options to retail consumers” and “restrict the sale, marketing and distribution of contracts for difference (CFDs) and similar products to retail customers”. What does this latest nanny-state (oops sorry, “address harm to retail consumers from the sale of certain complex derivative products”) move mean for the firms in the industry?...

Plus500 – argues “a good position for 2019”. How good?

Contracts for Differences online trading platform company Plus500 (PLUS) “is pleased to announce… the board believes that the group's results for the financial year ended 31 December 2018 will be ahead of previous market expectations” - and the shares have responded currently more than 11% higher, above 1400p. That though also still compares with more than 2000p reached in August…

Plus500 – emphasises “ahead of expectations”… but still a 14% quarterly revenue decline

A trading update from “online service provider for trading Contracts for Differences”, Plus500 (PLUS) including “in the three months ended 30 September 2018, the company's revenue was $100.1 million, a decrease of 14% compared to the same period last year. This period included two months (August and September) of trading post the newly implemented ESMA regulations”. The shares have currently responded, er, more than 6% higher, back above 1300p!…

Plus500 – first founders (including MD) sell shares, now Playtech does...

Shares in Plus500 (PLUS) are down from more than 2000p reached last month, but yesterday saw company founders - including Managing Director Gal Haber - sell in total 9.39 million shares at 1550p and today from Playtech (PTEC), a “Sale of holding in Plus500 Ltd” announcement…

New ESMA regulations are likely to have a negative impact on Plus500

CFD trading platform Plus500 (PLUS) has had a very strong start to the year and its share price has risen by around 90% off of the back of a strong trading performance, but I would definitely question whether that is set to continue going forwards due to some regulatory changes which are about to come into effect.

The Odey Death Portfolio

Hedge fund manager Crispin Odey has had an awful year. His uber bearish macro calls have not paid off and his big long and short stock bets have nearly all gone terribly wrong too. These days the start of the month ritual ( well six days in) involves chortling at the latest dire statistics AIM provides about itself. November was as bad as prior months. AIM is nothing if not consistent.

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Staring down the barrel - just one week left for the bailout placings

I am just so tired after day 4 of the olive harvest. You can see today's report - into the lair of the snake - HERE. In this podcast I cover: Cloudtag (CTAG), Strat Aero (AERO), Andalas (ADL), the CFD firms and the FCA, notably Plus 500 (PLUS), African Potash (FRAUD), Corero (CNS), Inspirit (INSP) and Fishing Republic (FISH).

CFD firms whacked as Britain's FCA follows European lead and clamps down

I do not use CFD's. They seem like a mugs game and indeed research by the FCA shows that 82% of clients of the big providers lose money. But then most folks lose on the horses or on betting on football so why target CFDs? It is all driven by MiFD2. We saw this take shape in Cyprus last week although Plus500 denied that it would be affected in a pathetic rebuttal to my scoop. That rebuttal was bollocks and Plus shares are among the big fallers today as the FCA has weighed in with a series of measures.

Plus500 – update as takeover by Playtech off following “an update from the FCA”…

Having consistently cautioned on the proposed 400p per share takeover of Plus500 (PLUS), the shares are currently falling below 350p following an announcement of “Termination of Merger, Dividend and Share Buyback”

Playtech – regulatory problems with t/o of Ava Trade, read-across to Plus500?

Holders of AIM-listed Plus500 (PLUS) might wish to note yesterday morning’s RNS from their white knight, Playtech (PTEC). It concerns the proposed takeover by Playtech of Irish-headquartered CFD broker Ava Trade Ltd. It seems that the Central Bank of Ireland has raised an objection, and has informed Playtech that it is opposed to the proposed transaction (see HERE).

JQW

JQW supposedly suspends operations (or not): another kill pending for the Filthy Forty?

It is London Buses time once again here on ShareProphets.com. A quiet few days on the AIM-China Filthy Forty and then all of a sudden three dreadful RNSs all come at once. Nine Filthy Forty members have already departed stage left. Three more are on death row following Nomad resignations – China Chaintek (CTEK), ARC Capital (ARC) and Global Market Group (GMC) which receives its last rites today. And now today two further China plays announced dire news, JQW (JQW) and Vmoto (VMT) as well as a potential bidder walking out on Geong (GNG) in the wake of a few issues with revenue recognition. No doubt the auditors there (UHY Hacker Young) will be shown to have acted with all due care.

Red Flags at Night: Plus 500 takeover delay and Circassia Pharma NED selling

Two no-one-is-watching o’clock RNSs caught my eye last night, both after 6pm when everyone had gone home for the weekend, or perhaps were limbering up for the opening skirmishes of the Rugby World Cup. One from fully-listed Circassia Pharmaceuticals plc (CIR), and the other involved the much covered AIM-listed Plus 500 (PLUS) and its proposed takeover by fully listed Playtech (PTEC).

Plus500 – interim results, has it really “performed well over the period”?

A results statement for the first six months of 2015 today from Plus500 (PLUS) includes that “notwithstanding the impact of UK regulatory matters, the group has performed well over the period”. Hmmm. Is this really the case? …

TechFinancials Inc. – profit warning, in the footsteps of Plus500?

Having only listed in March at 27p per share, shares in trading software and online brokerage operator, TechFinancials, Inc. (AIM: TECH) are currently crashing towards 20p on the back of an announcement including that it “will not meet market expectations with regard to revenue and profit for the year to 31 December 2015”. With the shares having exceeded 40p in the month of their listing, is this, like Plus500 (PLUS), going to disappoint following a share price surge?

Plus500 – acquisition by Playtech plc moves further closer, but not complete yet...

Recently operationally troubled CFD trading provider Plus500 (PLUS) has updated on the proposed 400p per share acquisition of the company by Playtech plc following a vote by shareholders of the latter on the deal…

Still Short Plus 500. Risk Reward attractive at 370p

I don’t know much about Playtech or its “colourful” founder Teddy Sagi (briefly imprisoned as a lad for grave deceit, bribery and insider trading) but they have certainly done no favours to bulls and bears alike in bidding 400p per share in cash for Plus 500 (PLUS).

Plus500 – “update” sends shares lower & omits critical information

Plus500 (PLUS) has announced an “update regarding its remediation plan for customers of Plus500UK”. How useful is the update though? …

Plus500 - another twist in the saga

Having taken its interest in Plus500 Ltd (PLUS) to more than 25%, Odey Asset Management has today stated that it considers the recent recommended cash offer of 400p per share from Playtech plc “materially undervalues Plus500 and we do not intend to vote in favour of the cash acquisition of Plus500 at this price”. What now, after this latest twist in this saga?

Tom Winnifrith Bearcast 19 May - another snake encountered and snakes telling lies on AIM

Yes, this time it was at the Greek Hovel less than 15 yards from the building. And I was just 3 or 4 foot away. Cripes. I really do not like snakes which brings me on to Philip Crawford on Lombard Risk and Nomad Charles Stanley which today signed off on an OUTRIGHT LIE of an RNS penned by Crawford. I have a 14 year old score to settle with the tosser Crawford and so accuse him of lying to investors today. Is that not against AIM rules? Elsewhere I look at Tungsten, Plus 500, Sefton, Coms and Rose Petroleum which are all sells. Events at Rose have moved fast since the bearcast vindicating me (see HERE)

While  it may not necessarily be the case in this instance, from my experience as a broker in the 1990s and 2000s, the main source of pain and anguish for brokerages / investment houses tends to be the competition whistleblowing or nobbling  via the regulators, rather than the behaviour of the clients or indeed the markets. Lehman Brothers rather learned this the hard way – allegedly.

The bears not alone in a number of their 2015 UK Investor Show top short selections...

At the 18th April 2015 UK Investor Show, the top shorts of bears Evil Knievil, Lucian Miers, Matt Earl and Kevin Ashton were announced - watch the video HERE. As shown below (from the FCA's spreadsheet of short positions required to be disclosed to it), a number of their top selections have also been identified as shorts by significant investment companies. We'll monitor progress, but, as noted previously, investors may at least want to double check if they are on the other side of the trades...

Reader Poll Results – which of the Bear Portfolio stocks will crash most by Christmas

At the weekend we updated the ShareProphets Bear Portfolio compiled by myself, Matt Earl, Lucian Miers and Evil Knievil. So far our average sell is down by 18.2% in just over three months. Better days lie ahead. But which of the ten stocks we expect to slump do readers think will crash most by Christmas. You said:

Reader Poll – which of the 10 stocks in the Bear Portfolio will crash most by Christmas

So far the bear portfolio of Matt Earl (the Dark Destroyer), Evil Knievil (the fat man), Lucian Miers (the Bard of the Boleyn) and Tom Winnifrith (the Sheriff of AIM) is down by an average of 18.2%. Today one stock leaves the portfolio (New World) having duly collapsed and in its stead goes African Mining (AMI) which will collapse. But which of our 10 shorts do you think will slump most by Christmas. The deadline for voting is midnight tonight as things are moving rapidly with at least one constituent.

The Matt Earl, Evil Knievil, Lucian Miers, Tom Winnifrith Summer Bear Portfolio revisited and updated view

Back in the summer, July 9, the 4 Bears sat down and compiled our top ten shorts for the summer. There has been one disaster – Concha (CHA) – but despite that an average loss (gain for us) of 18.2% per short is not bad. So where do we stand now?

The Top 10 Shorts for the summer reviewed – Naibu leads the way

A month ago myself, Evil Knievil, Lucian Miers and Matt Earl (the Dark Destroyer) agreed on a sort of joint top ten UK stocks to short for the summer. Since then the FTSE 100 has fallen by 8%.  As you can see below our average fall is 10.51% so we are doing okay so far. Only two of the ten are up.

Two weeks ago Evil Knievil, Matt Earl, Lucian Miers and I served up our top ten stocks to short this summer and why – HERE. Avanti Communications (AVN) has already done the decent thing and issued a profits warning. We asked our readers at the weekend to vote on which of the ten would be next And the results are:

Evil Knievil, Lucian Miers, Matt Earl and Tom Winnifrith – the top 10 stocks in London to short for summer

Anyone who was at UK Investor 2014 knows that the Bears session (HERE) saw some great calls. And so ahead of a long sweaty summer I asked Evil Knievil, Matt Earl (The Dark Destroyer) and Lucian Miers for their top 5 shorts of the summer and for good measure I add in my own. Between us we have thus compiled the top ten stocks to short in London!

Plus500, The Google Con and the internet explained to Evil Knievil

A couple of years ago I was on stage with Evil Knievil and I ended up pointing out to him numerous times that he doesn’t get “internet companies.”  I recall he was happy to admit it.
