As an investor, doing nothing is generally under-rated (but sometimes the facts have changed)...

The oil price tanking - for reasons I explained at the weekend HERE - and shares tumbling across the board on concerns as to what damage the Coronavirus is doing, and will do, to the real economy and thus to corporate earnings. Generally, my view is that doing nothing as an investor is something that is greatly under-rated. It is perhaps better to wait until the smoke clears. Having said that, sometimes we need to accept that facts have changed and that does fundamentally alter an investment thesis...

Over the last few years I have watched passively as 88Energy (88E) has tried to exploit what it perceives as great oil opportunities at Icewine and has been happy to bandy about some very large resource numbers, only equalled by the number of bulletin board posts on the matter and the number of words in the torrent of RNS irrelevance. A new farmout deal to Premier Oil (PMO) looks to me like the first real sign that 88Energy actually may have a chance of delivering something of value. On Monday Premier Oil (PMO) announced the sale of its Norwegian assets for $120million cash. The company will use the money to help pay down some of its sizeable debts. According to its half yearly report, Premier had net debts of just over $2billion versus cash and undrawn debt facilities of $1.5billion. The business is clearly struggling, as reflected by its share price performance over the last eighteen months. On the verge of tumbling out of the FTSE250, Premier trades at 74p (last seen) and has a market cap of £376million. More pain to come for the oil sector

Oil companies have been hammered again in recent months, but I think there is still far worse to come for some of them. Reading the bulletin boards you could probably be forgiven for not realising the extent of the problems that many producers will be facing in the near future, as some investors are sticking their heads in the sand and expecting a quick bounce back in the oil price – as they have been for months now!

Time to bank some oil profits

It has been a great start to the year for anyone who has been buying into many of the larger oil producers. Most of these large producers, and companies associated with the oil industry, hit their lowest market caps for a number years at the end of 2014 and going into 2015.

So What is a North Sea Oilfield Actually Worth Then?

Could the Mediterranean Oil & Gas takeover get Rockhopper’s share price moving again?

This morning’s announcement by Rockhopper Exploration (RKH), to take over Mediterranean Oil & Gas (MOG), is a very interesting move. Shareholders in Rockhopper had readied themselves to sit back and wait for the commercialisation of the Sea Lion field, north of the Falklands Islands, hopefully by 2018. Meanwhile, shareholders in Mediterranean, flush with the recent legal victory over Leni Gas & Oil (LGO), still had a nervous wait on the outcome of the  soon to spud Hagar Qim exploration well, off the coast of Malta. Today’s deal delivers a significant shake-up to the status quo of both companies and could present a buying opportunity.
