I tipped shares in Saffron Energy (SRON) but urged folks to take profits some months ago. The shares were then 8p+ having listed at 5p. In recent weeks the shares have slithered back towards that 5p and I have been urged by folks to re-tip. I resisted that urge. Something was wrong. I’ve been bearish on the valuation of Sound Energy (SOU) for a while now, and nothing in the updates this week on Tendrara or its final results have changed that opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I can certainly see potential in this company, and it has done well to turn things around and get to where it is currently, but I still think that it is crazy that it is trading at a market cap of well over £500 million at this point in time.

Valuing small resource companies can be difficult, and often they will appear to be far cheaper than they really are. The bulletin boards, Twitter, etc are full of people extolling the virtues of the companies that they are invested in and pointing out that they should be worth far more than what the share price currently reflects.

In my humble view, now could be a good time to return to oil shares. I certainly hope so, as I have lost a packet since the big oil crash which began a few years ago. I’ve gradually dumped my holdings in the hopeful explorers, but I still have major holdings in the big producers, like Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA), BP (BP.) and Tullow (TLW). All of them are well shy of their previous bests.

Hello Share Screamers. It's quite a few years back now that I made a juicy packet out of my Centrica (CNA) shares, first bought in a government share-buy scheme. Seems centuries since we had those tempting offers, doesn’t it? Ever since I sold those shares, I can report that they have not done particularly well. The big problem with Centrica (CNA), which trades as British Gas, is the growing competition.

Earlier this week Solo Oil (SOLO) announced quite startling news - that it was to lapse an option to buy an additional 1.25% stake in the Kiliwani gas field a deal first announced back in February of this year. This leaves Solo's stake at 7.125% but begs very serious questions of Neil Ritson's floundering company. Is bankruptcy looming and is Kiliwani not living up to the hype?

You would have thought I had learnt my lesson on the temporary power market following the disastrous APR Energy ‘excitements’ of a year plus ago. Perhaps I feel emboldened because the ultimate takeover of the company by a do-gooding consortium bailed me out on the name and added a touch of profit to boot. Alternatively I feel a touch of unfinished business on Aggreko (AGK) after calling the stock interesting when it exited the FTSE-100 fifteen months ago and it has quietly been one of the stars of my portfolio year-to-date. At least until today.

In this podcast I discuss OPEC and the oil price. I think you should have some oil exposure via BP (BP.A) and I am intyerested in a couple of gas plays, notably Ascent (AST). But I remain uber bearish on oil juniors as I have been (correctly) for four years. Among those heading for zero which I discuss are Gulf Keystone (GKP), Xcite Energy (XEL), IGAS (IGAS), Mosman Oil & Gas (MSMN), Northern Petroleum (NOP) and LGO Energy (LGO). And there are others take may not hit zero within a year but which still face share price decimation such as Solo (SOLO) and the Horse Shite/ Horse Hill Gatwick Gusher plays.

North Sea-focused Cluff Natural Resources (CLNR) is understood to be poised to announce encouraging gas reserve figures for its licences in the southern North Sea’s Lytham Field. Steered by seasoned resources entrepreneur and former owner of the Spectator magazine Algy Cluff, the company, whose shares have fallen from a 12-month high of 4.87p to 3p on energy price weakness and delays to its underground coal gasification (UCG) project in Scotland, is thought by observers to have established potential reserves of more than 800 billion cubic feet, which could be worth between $20 million (£13.3 million) and $40 million.

When I heard that CEB Resources (CEB) CEO Dave Whitby was coming to the UK for a meet and greet with investors I thought, “here we go”. As much as I like the story and can see the opportunity in the Indonesian gas market, Whitby’s visit looked like a par for the course placement run. So confident was I that this was just another foreign executive coming over to tap into the seemingly inexhaustible British desire for resource-based pipe dreams, I bet cynically bet Doc Holiday a fiver that the company would place within a month of Whitby leaving. I was wrong. Serve me right for taking on the market mechanics maestro.

The CEB Resources (CEB) story has won over a lot of supporters in the market. This is unsurprising given the five-fold increase in the company’s share price since the start of the year. Diversified coal gasification play Cluff Natural Resources (CLNR) has raised £2.2 million to advance projects including one find with a potential 450 to 500 billion cubic feet of gas, worth some $1 billion (£662 million). The company raised the money at 4.25p, having tapped AIM for £2 million in December at a lesser 3p, and expects to spend £1.4 million of it preparing this year to seek planning approval, including submitting an environmental impact assessment, for test production at its key Kincardine underground coal gasification (UCG) project in Scotland’s Firth of Forth, which has been estimated to hold up to 350 million tonnes of coal.

SSE (SSE) shares are currently trading at 1497p offering a yield of 5.79% and on a PE of 11.9. The dividend is covered around one and a half times, and the company has a good track record of consistently increasing its dividends. Many of SSE’s senior figures have said that dividend payment is one of their main priorities.

Algy Cluff, the veteran resources entrepreneur and former owner of the Spectator magazine, is on the look-out for deals to propel Cluff Natural Resources (CLNR) into the business of turning off-shore coal deposits into gas-producing assets in a way he and the company’s backers claim will be able to provide cheap and environmentally acceptable fuel supplies for years to come. Speculation has suggested potential partners could include German engineering and electronics giant Siemens or Swiss-based chemicals group Ineos, active at the Grangemouth oil refinery in the Firth of Forth, but AIM-quoted Cluff Natural remains tight-lipped.

Today folk I update you on several fronts. First of all I will bring an end to two trades that I started in January. I said to sell Petro Matad (MATD) at 10.25p. It is now 3.75p. I said to buy Nostra Terra (NTOG) at 0.25p. It is now 0.34p. Well done to anyone who followed in and made stonking gains of 64% and 36%. Close out both now and take the cash.
