Zanaga is years from production and the shares are now overvalued

The typical life cycle of a small mining company from initial discovery of a resource through to eventual production tends to feature lots of peaks and troughs along the way as various stages are reached.

Be a Monarch of the Glen by Investing in a Share which may No longer Be a Stag at Bay

Hello Share Swappers. This old punter is not a fan of mining shares. Apart from British Energy and the big British banks, mining has always been my biggest loser. Whereas, the related sector of oil has done me proud. Think BG and Dragon Oil, all big winners for ShareProphets members. But, nevertheless, my selection today is a big miner.

Glencore - imminent M&A splurge suggests you should go bye bye

Published 126 days ago

Who remembers the infamous zero pence share price target established by one 'teenage scribbler' broker on Glencore (GLEN) the thick end of a couple of years ago? Funnily enough, via a decent commodity marketing/trading business, a cute money raising and some decent tier 1 mining assets, Glencore shares did not trouble the scorers below even 50p and over the last 20 months have recovered back to levels seen four or five years back. Today's first half numbers continue that renaissance.

Time to sell Glencore (and other big miners) before the markets take a tumble

Horizonte Minerals a speculative buy as it develops its Brazilian plant

Published 762 days ago

Horizonte Minerals (HZM), the AIM-quoted nickel hopeful focused on Brazil, is drawing encouragement from progress with the rotary kiln pilot plant for its Araguia project in the country’s north-central Para state, holding an estimated resource of nearly 100 million tonnes with 1.33% and 1.21% nickel. The company, whose shares languish at 1.92p between a 12-month high of 3.88p and a 1.5p low, says its rotary kiln pilot plant campaign there has ‘produced high-grade ferronickel on a continuous and sustained basis’ and has ‘confirmed production of high-grade commercial ferronickel.’

Chemring: ammunition for the cautious about the world

Quelle surprise the shares have been slammed over 30%!

Horizonte in $8m deal for Glencore nickel project

Published 808 days ago

Out-of-favour nickel hopeful Horizonte Minerals (HZM) has agreed to buy financially-strapped mining giant Glencore’s Araguia nickel project in north-central Brazil, near to its own Araguia venture, in a deal which chief executive officer Jeremy Martin says will create a combined operation able to produce 3,000 tonnes a year at a grade of 2% for the first 10 years. Backed by Canadian mining heavweight Teck Resources with a 38% stake, Horizonte, whose shares at 1.65p have fallen from 2006’s AIM float price of30p and a 12-month high of 5.12p, has agreed to pay $8 million (£5.3 million) in stages for the Glencore Araguia Project (GAP) in Brazil’s Para State.

Panic city at Glencore = mining sector opportunities

Published 821 days ago

Let’s review recent events at the self-styled mining giant Glencore (GLEN).  A month or so ago Glencore management gave a pretty clear view in its post results conference call that the balance sheet was strong enough not to raise money. Nine days ago bullied by panicky ‘key stakeholders’ (i.e. big institutional shareholders) the company announced a surprise range of initiatives as I noted here to strengthen their balance sheet. On the accompanying conference call the management noted cost cuts, mine mothballing and disposals were all way preferable to an equity money raising but that – once again – they would be sounding out the company’s ‘key stakeholders’ to gauge their views.

Glencore’s non-surprising surprising money raising

Published 829 days ago

Well, well, well.  For me today’s number one most interesting UK regulatory news update was from Glencore (GLEN).  Just nineteen short days ago after listening to the management of the FTSE-100 mining/commodity trading company confirm their faith in their balance sheet and general corporate approach, Glencore have unveiled a range of initiatives including a US$2.5bn of new equity issuance, the suspension of the dividend for at least the next year and various asset sales and mothballing actions to slash US$10bn from their net debt pile.   Well I did warn at the above link that Glencore was ‘still too much of a full-on risk situation to get involved – and don’t believe that 9% dividend yield many data providers are highlighting at the moment…Enthusiasts for large cap mining investment should continue to prefer Randgold Resources (RRS)…or…BHP Billiton (BLT)…(companies) with a proper underpinned dividend and little debt’.  For the one-line summary this remains my view.

BHP Billiton – 10 quid odd a share is just plain rude

Published 842 days ago

Who ever said that large cap equities could not be exciting?  A quick glance at the share price graph of the world’s largest miner BHP Billiton (BLT) shows that even a miner with lowest quartile production costs, rising volumes, low debt and a progressive high single digit dividend yield can still struggle against the might of negative investor sentiment towards the space.

Glencore – an update from the large cap mining sector coalface

Published 848 days ago

For the mining sector the last couple of years have been almost a perfect storm with its biggest customer China having a growth slowdown and strength in the US dollar further crimping demand.  Throw in too the lagged impact of new mines commissioned in more bullish times coming on stream the supply/demand balance has been dire.  And so shares in the sector have plunged.

Rio Tinto at 3005p is close to the picket wire- time to buy?

Published 1161 days ago

Over the last five years it has generally been profitable to pick up Rio Tinto (RIO) shares – or RTZ as we old farts still refer to them as - at 3000p and below because as the share price graph shows, this has been the point when the investor risk reward ratio has been more heavily weighted towards reward than risk. Moreover, on a year’s chart the share price seems to be well supported; take a peek.

Sirius Petroleum; something not quite right about this story

Published 1186 days ago

I last wrote about Sirius Petroleum (SRSP) towards the end of July and suggested the company was “nearly there” in finally realising its ambition to drill the Ororo-1 well, offshore Nigeria. Located in the Ororo oil field (OML 95), Ororo-1 was drilled by Chevron in 1986 and had an initial flow rate of c.2,200bopd from one zone and another 600bopd from a separate oil producing sand. According to the official line from Sirius, Chevron abandoned this discovery during a lower price environment, but the strength in oil over the last decade has made projects such as these economic. This all sounds extremely appealing, but there are problems with this story.

Bushveld Minerals and Mind-blowing Vanadium Upside

Published 1235 days ago

Today I purchased a second packet of shares in Bushveld Minerals (BMN) so I am talking my own book. But this book is full of twists and turns and Bushveld has mind-blowing potential. I covered Bushveld shortly ago along with Ferrum Crescent (FCR) HERE after a vanadium financial study was released and now I have had time to digest and trawl the data, the numbers are truly mind-blowing and need looking at again.

Sirius Petroleum; nearly there (at last!!!)

Published 1240 days ago

Since it came to market in March 2011, Sirius Petroleum (SRSP) isn’t exactly a share that has set the market on fire. Over the last three years the stock has traded in a tight range between 2.5p and 5.5p. All that has been remarkable about this Nigerian oil exploration play is how regular the pattern of its share price has been. This morning Sirius announced a $20million placement, priced at 3p. This money will go towards the estimated $25.1million cost of drilling the first well in the Ororo off-shore field. For a stock with a market cap of £32.9million, and with a c.$5.1 funding gap to fill before September 15th, this might sound like an incredibly risky place to put your money. Betting on an oil exploration company, which will likely just about be able to scrape together the money for one shot at the big time, is usually a recipe for disaster on AIM. However, in the case of Sirius, previous testing work completed by Chevron in 1986 at the Ororo field suggests the company could be onto a winner.

Picking Ruspetro?! Have I lost my mind?! We'll see...

Published 1275 days ago

A cursory glance at Ruspetro (RPO) would probably be enough to put off a lot of people. The share price has performed badly since the middle of 2012, and although a lot of AIM oil shares have suffered similar fates, Ruspetro has shed over 90 per cent of it value in those two years.
