No longer able to convince the world it’s got China’s economy under control, the government in Beijing is now using ever do more desperate measures. China’s economic weaknesses have been well documented. Among other things, there are significant amounts of bad debt, a rapidly ageing population, fanciful “official” statistics, growing labour unrest, and a host of inefficient, bloated state-owned enterprises.
