Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from ShareProphets). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.
Sometimes in business you have a moral choice. Do you accept the custom of an individual or not. As a libertarian I do not thing it should be for the state to tell me who I can or cannot choose to serve.
So I regard bakers from Ulster who do not want to make a wedding cake for a gay couple as acting wrongly but would defend their right - driven by their faith not bigotry - not to accept those customers. But I would also hope that folks in the local community who were not gay would take their custom elsewhere as would I. In the same vein, if a gay hotelier wishes to exclude straights from his establishment I'd support his right to do so although I find such sexuality apartheid totally un-needed in 21st century Britain and actually just plain tedious.
And that brings me to ADVFN (AFN) on whose Bulletin Boards last week this post - as spotted by Juicin a reader of this site appeared:

here winifrith bud, i see your girl turned 16 recently, yum yum
Since my daughter did indeed turn 16 that day this Bulletin Board Moron is not advocating anything illegal. But is it tasteful?
I would argue that it crosses the threshold of decency for an adult man to post that sort of garbage. It is of the genre of when the loathsome Russell Brand and the ghastly Jonathan Ross left voice messages which they then broadcast to ageing actor Andrew Sachs about how Brand had bedded his grand-daughter. It is just offensive.
I suggested to ADVFN that it not only remove the post but give Humbert Humbert (posting as headinthesands) a ban from its site. The call is that of ADVFN. Does it want 1 more customer (who will generate about 2p in ad revenues every year) or does it wish to preserve. on the platform it controls, some sense of what most folks would regard as right and wrong?
Free speech should be defended but that does not mean that supporters of it - in which category, and to his credit, I very firmly do put ADVFN CEO Clem Chambers - need to give a platform to views and statements which, objectively, society as a whole can agree are beyond the pale. The comment of Mr Humbert are not in any grey area, they are very clearly vile. Society loses nothing in having them removed and Mr Humbert losing a platform.
Having written to ADVFN chairman Mike Hodges on this matter last week I have yet to get a response from him which is really rather sad. His response should be a no brainer.
Never miss a story.
